Workplace exposure

This dashboard provides additional information about potential COVID-19 exposure in the workplace and supplements the email notifications sent to employees per the requirements of Title 8 – California Code of Regulations, Section 3205.

A “COVID-19 exposure” means being within 6 feet of a COVID-19 case for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or greater in any 24-hour period within or overlapping with the “high-risk exposure period” defined here. This definition applies regardless of the use of face coverings.

A “high-risk exposure period” means the following time period: (1) For persons who develop COVID-19 symptoms: from two days before they first develop symptoms until 10 days after symptoms first appeared, and 24 hours have passed with no fever, without the use of fever-reducing medications, and symptoms have improved; or (2) For persons who test positive who never develop COVID-19 symptoms: from two days before until 10 days after the specimen for their first positive test for COVID-19 was collected.

Please note that there can be reporting delays between when an individual is tested and found to be positive, contact tracing completed, and when the corresponding potential exposure locations are reflected on this dashboard. The Workplace Exposure Dashboard dates reflect either the date a person developed symptoms, or in the absence of symptoms, the date of a positive test result. This date is more effective for personal exposure consideration as it defines the high-risk exposure period. It also explains why the dates vary from case to case.

Relevant information is reported to Environment, Health, & Safety for follow-up if a case is work-related. The information is then loaded into a tracking system and the dashboard is refreshed nightly based on this information. The delay in information appearing on this dashboard does not impact the speed at which positive cases are addressed.

Potential exposure notification emails are sent to all employees across the entire campus because we do not know where an employee might have been on campus. These emails are sent within 24 hours of the positive case being identified by EH&S as being on campus. With COVID-19 spreading in the greater community, you should always assume that anyone you come in contact with could be positive and take appropriate precautions.

It’s important to note that cases reported on this and other dashboards do not necessarily reflect spread on campus. In the vast majority of cases tested at or reported to UC Berkeley, there is little to no evidence of onward transmission in the workplace.
